April 20- Petty Theft- (Building 53) – A UNF employee contacted UPD after realizing her cell phone was missing from her office. She had to leave her office door open because her key wasn’t working. The victim’s purse was left untouched, and she has contacted her cell phone service provider to get the phone turned off. 
 
April 22 – Simple Battery – (Lot 18) – A UNF student suffered minor injuries after another student pulled her out of her vehicle by the hair and then hit her while she was on the ground. …

UNF recognized two students for their volunteerism and granted another with a posthumous degree April 24 at the spring graduation commencement.
Ian McInnis, political science major, was presented the Senior Service Award for his continued and sustained dedication to UNF and to the local area.
On Fridays, he spends a lot of time at the Ronald McDonald house in Jacksonville, a place where families can stay while their children are receiving medical care from an area hospital, McInnis said.

As of today, Mexico city has literally shut down everything dealing with public life. Schools, restaurants, museums, and other public venues because of a swine flu outbreak that has killed at least 80 people and may be responsible for 40 other deaths across the world, including New York as of today.
Many people in the Mexican capital were wearing face masks while in public. Authorities say 1,000 people have become ill according to a recent report from CNN.

A UNF student and his friend were physically assaulted by two unknown suspects during a road rage incident April 17 in Jacksonville Beach.
The passenger was a 22-year-old sports management major and is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Shands Hospital, said the passenger’s mother.
She said he is still in a coma and experiencing inner cranium pressure. The doctors have given him a drug to keep him paralyzed.
“We are just taking it one day at a time,” she said. “It is just a very slow process.”

While some American citizens may have been frantically crunching numbers in fear of the infamous April 15 tax deadline, others linked together in a series of local and national protests known as “tea parties.”
Taxpayers have been organizing these events through grassroots techniques for several months with the hopes of expressing their discontent with the current state of the U.S. economy and its leaders—more specifically irresponsible fiscal policy and intrusive government.

With the end of the semester upon us, most faculty members are busy preparing final exams, posting grades and cleaning out their offices for the summer break, but recently a few teachers caught a break with the announcement of the 2008-2009 Faculty Awards winners.
Sixteen professors were announced the winners of five different cash awards totaling $35,500.
The most prestigious award is the Distinguished Professor Award won by Jefferey Steagall from the Economics and Geography department. Runner-up for the award was William Klostermeyer from the School of Computing.

A UNF public relations class, taught by professor Bobbi Doggett, is taking classroom assignments into the real world.
The course’s main purpose is to act as a PR agency, raising awareness and funds for the company and cause they choose through the development of new PR strategies. The class chooses a different non-profit client to assist every semester, Doggett said.
The spring 2009 class chose the Northeast Florida Boys and Girls Club.
As the class is limited to 25 seats, students must bring in their resumes and apply for different positions or roles …

April 4- Underage Possession of Alcohol (Building Q) - UPD was contacted after a resident assistant heard loud noises and what sounded like a bouncing ping pong ball coming from a dorm room. The officer noticed a makeshift beer pong table, two unopened cans of beer and many empty beer cans in the trash can. Five students were referred to student conduct and two were given trespass warnings.

First-year UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll, announced the signing of the first UNF recruit since the program has reached full Division I status. David Jeune, a 6-7 power forward from Okeechobee High School, will be looked to for help in scoring and rebounds.
