Nathaniel “Nat” Glover, vice president of Public Relations in the UNF President’s office, has overcome many challenges in his lifetime.
The struggle that built his character, the same struggle many minorities face in this changing world, was the topic of his most recent discussion in the UNF Library special collections room, he said.
Going on memories, experiences and wisdom, Glover shared personal stories of his life in Jacksonville and his position at UNF with about 60 people.
Glover is the former sheriff for Jacksonville and considers himself distinguished in the community for being …

What have you been able to accomplish so far in SG?
Name 3 things UNF does well and 3 things it could improve on.

We revised Title 6 [elections] and Title 8 [finance] of the
constitution and made immense progress on campus with athletic promotions and restoring Library hours, so it’s been a very productive year.
Things we can improve on are parking, creating a legacy on campus – creating traditions through events – and sound. It hinders us from …

Obesity isn’t something just your parents have to worry about anymore. During the past several years, obesity on college campuses has sky-rocketed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In 2000, 15.2 million U.S. college students were obese, up almost 8 percent from 1991. In Florida alone, 23.6 percent of adults are considered obese, according to the CDC.
Obesity is not to be confused with the dreaded “freshman 15,” which attributes slight weight gain in the first year to severe lifestyle changes.
Rather, the CDC defines obesity “as an excessively high …

Professors are embracing cell phones in the classroom. What’s another typical “no-no” that should be accepted?

Hats. If I’m going to cheat, I’m not going to use my baseball cap. And saying it’s disrespectful is as old-school as Vanilla Ice. Professors need to stop discriminating students who choose to not show their bad hair cuts, myself included.

I would like to see a local venue where students can eat, drink and smoke under one roof. Or they can just allow alcohol in …

With the looming financial news we receive every day, there has been a never-ending search for alternative sources of revenue to make up for budget cuts.
In Florida, our government is facing a whopping $2.6 billion budget deficit.
To make up for the losses, Florida lawmakers are looking to cut funding for schools, affordable housing programs, teacher bonuses and increase traffic fines.
While looking at these alternatives, there is still one that has not been given enough thought: increasing tobacco taxes.
Increasing tobacco taxes in Florida would generate the much-needed revenue to help Floridians …

After high school graduation, making the choice to attend college can help you mature not only in your knowledge and understanding of subjects, but also in the five main essences of your being: physical, psychological, social, mental and spiritual.
UNF has done its best thus far to cater to all areas of its student’s lives.
We are provided with a variety of fitness centers, classes and exercise fields to improve our overall physical health. The counseling and advising centers are open to students seeking emotional or psychological aid. There are innumerable social, …

Dear Editor,
Various UNF campus ministries partnered with Student Government both Thursday and Friday night last week to bring a large-scale Christian concert to the Arena.
The concert featured some relatively big names from within the Christian subculture, and it was an event many have looked forward to for some time now, hoping it would be an opportunity for Christians from all across campus to come together.
Here’s the problem: It was completely free, meaning SG funds covered the entire event.
Considering all of the resources required to make a large concert possible, those …

Dear Editor,
In an effort to protect academic freedom and foster knowledge, universities generally have come to be known as environments where free speech should be encouraged.
Additionally, as a public university (meaning that it is partially supported with tax dollars provided by the state), UNF is prohibited from obstructing members of the public from visiting our campus to express themselves freely in an open forum, unless they interfere with the university’s academic or administrative endeavors. In this case, that open forum tends to be the Green, where a crowd frequently gathers.
Although …

Dear Editor,
UNF students who are concerned with the religiosity propagated on the Green should exercise their freedom of speech to combat those ideas with opposing viewpoints rather than calling for administration to quell free expression.
It is shameful that the most vocal 21st century UNF students have thus far expressed themselves by saying, in essence, “Someone should shut Reverend Whoever up so I can lie in the sun.”
What a lazy life they must lead. Instead of using their own intellectual abilities to combat the ideas they oppose, they want university officials …
