As society’s need for instant information grows, colleges and universities are implementing or expanding wireless Internet service more and more on their campuses.

In August, Jacksonville University expanded wireless access from certain spots to almost everywhere on its campus – specifically in hallways and common areas of buildings and dorms, said Charlie Ulezelski, JU director of Information Technology Operations.

“We weren’t ready to expand the system until we could do it in a way where we could ensure the security of our network and also protect the security of our people using our system,” Ulezelski said. “That’s why we hadn’t rolled it out anytime soon.”

For the second consecutive year, Florida legislators made cuts to the Bright Futures scholarship program.

With the status of the economy, increasing state-wide budget cuts and hopes to increase state-wide tuition, more changes are expected to occur, according to university officials.

The supplemental award – which can be used to purchase textbooks for students receiving the 100 percent Bright Futures award – was cut from $300 to $225 per term in 2007 and reduced again to $187.50 July 1 for cost savings.

Greek Life recruitment is underway with sororities finishing Sept. 7 and fraternities starting Sept. 8. Members from various fraternities set tents on the Green to explain their fraternity to anyone interested. Recruitment will end Sept. 12.
