It’s a presidential rally, not a party

Dear Editor,
Last week’s issue of the Spinnaker featured a front-page picture of a group of UNF College Republicans who were shirtless, covered in paint and hooting and hollering at a political rally for presidential candidate John McCain.
Note that in the photograph no one else in the vicinity donned such ridiculous attire, or lack thereof.
UNF has, for some time, tried to shed its image of a podunk, commuter school from the South.
But the actions of College Republicans reaffirm many students’ secretly held beliefs that the university should not be taken as saliently as it presumes to be, and devalues the seriousness many people hold for the political process.
Blatantly said, this type of behavior by a college political organization makes our university look laughable in the eyes of other schools of higher education.
It should be stated that these students are under no contract with this university to remain publicly clothed throughout their terms.
But it must also be said that their representation of UNF at a presidential rally reminded all of Jacksonville of just why people believe college students live up to their loud-mouthed, ignoramus stereotype.

Maybe the students should have fainted at the sight of the “chosen one.”
I was there, saw them. I thought it was great to show this kind of support. Unfortunately, there are so many young Americans that naturally gravitate towards the Democratic Party and liberalism without knowing the “ins and outs” of both parties. I see this is a great support tactic for our country and for the Republican party! Maybe I didn’t look closely enough, but I didn’t even know they were from UNF? I just thought what they did was great
If only more people showed support for their country in the manner that these young men did.
