Apathy reason for SG’s shortcomings

Dear Editor,
Every semester I pick up a copy of the Spinnaker that has an article pertaining to how Student Government does not come through with their promises.
I am amused because I cannot help but to think about the students’ apathetic attitude toward our campus.
Last semester, approximately 2,000 students voted.
So in reality, the students are telling us only about 13 percent care about where their $7.99 activity and service fee per credit hour goes.
With the economy in turmoil and the general notion most college students are short on cash, you would think a higher percentage of students would care about what SG does with their money.
This SG election, instead of venting about how the back way is taken to class to avoid the fliers and free food, students should take the time to talk to their senators and candidates running.
Doing so will help gain a better and more independent perspective on who to vote for instead of just supporting whoever gives out the most free items.
Students can’t complain about what SG does or does not do if they don’t make the effort to go to the polls and vote.
