Ignorant criticism against current president

Dear Editor,
Last Wednesday’s Spinnaker included a letter to the editor from the Senate President concerning Student Body President John Barnes.

The letter criticized Barnes for recommending the nomination of John Barnes’ girlfriend and his fraternity brothers for positions in SG.

All agency directors and assistant directors are recommended to the Student Body President, who then forwards his or her recommendation for the position.

They were all hired only after confirmation by a two-thirds vote of the student Senate, under review of the Senate president.

All executive cabinet members are subject to confirmation of 50 percent of the Senate for approval as well.

SG is not the place for students to play government.

This organization is responsible for the allocation of $3.2 million in the best interest of the students, and the Senate has the responsibility for the majority of this budget.

I encourage you to elect your leaders on merit and the initiatives they support and not on unprofessional antics.

Unfortunately, some members of SG are so driven by motivations other than those that are in the best interest of the students, they fail to utilize the abundant opportunities in front of them.

As the SG Chief of Staff, I would personally like to assure you that the Executive Branch remains committed to ensure your activity and service fees are used productively.

Tom Blanchard
Student Government Chief of Staff
